Hi, my name is Jonathan Pulley and I am one of the Math teachers here at Arapahoe Ridge High School. I have worked on the campus since 2003- when I moved to Boulder from the UK.
After graduating from the University of North Wales with a BA in Economics and Accounting I decided that I would travel for a while before settling into my working life. I spent a year in Asia and Australia before returning to Europe where I worked for GM. In this time it dawned on me that I would like to teach- contrary to my childhood belief- I grew up with parents who taught and had decided from an early age it was not for me. I gained my teaching qualification at the University of Lancashire, becoming certified in secondary math.
I started career in a high school in the north of England where I taught math and physical education for 3 years. My travel bug was still alive and well and itching to leave the UK, so I applied to various schools across the globe and ended up spending the next 4 years teaching in a large international school in Mexico City. A bit of a contrast from the small town I had grown up in. I found that life in Mexico was missing the outdoor adventure and found myself continually being drawn to Colorado for mountain biking, and snowboarding, so I set about moving to Colorado. My first venture here was to a school in Aurora that dealt with at risk students. I realized that that was the type of student I wanted to work with.
My initial visa only allowed for a 2 year stay so I headed back to the UK for a year visiting family and friends and a quick trip round the world, and a trip to visit my wife’s family in New Zealand.
