Principal Interview Update
Last week we interviewed for the position of Aspen Creek K-8 Principal.  Many of you attended the Community Forum on Tuesday evening and listened to the three finalists answer questions about their leadership styles and experiences. The parents and staff in attendance that night were given the opportunity to provide feedback on all three finalists.

Following the completion of our in-depth and deliberate interview process, BVSD administration has decided that is in the best interest of the school and the community to reopen the position at this time.

The principal position will be reposted this week with a broadened outreach to attract quality candidates.   The interviews are scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2008, and the original interview screening committee will be invited to represent the school. The Community Forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, June 3, at Aspen Creek K-8.

The goal of the district is to find the right person to lead your school, one who will meet the high expectations you have for your students, staff and school community.  Thank you for your support and your understanding as we move forward in this important selection process.

Information on Mr Romero
Celebrating What’s Right
So very often our focus is on what's wrong in our community or our world and the "what's right" takes a back seat.  I wanted to take the opportunity to publicly celebrate the compassion, generosity and wealth of human spirit that has been exhibited by students, staff and others in the Aspen Creek community.
Our beloved sixth grade Science teacher, Mike Romero has been battling cancer since the beginning of the school year. Students at Aspen Creek have rallied around him in many ways, including hat day fundraisers, lemonade stands, offerings from savings accounts and piggy banks, cards, funny anecdotes, and fervent hopes and prayers.  Their families have been no less supportive, making their own donations to the Romero Fund, and organizing a gift basket fundraiser in Mr. Romero's honor. Mike's colleagues have also made many efforts, garnering extra sick leave, providing a video iPod to help pass the time during chemotherapy, and most recently helping with their own version of an "extreme yard makeover" at the Romero home (which would not have been possible without generous donations from Lafayette Florist, Pioneer Sand Company, and Natalie Stone at Ford’s Roll Off Services).  Mike's journey has taught us all to seize the day, to embrace life, and to meet change, loss and challenges with strength, grace and determination.
We are all better people for having had the opportunity to see first hand how children and young adults from kindergarten through eighth grade can make big things happen.  Thanks so very much to all of the adults who have supported their efforts.
An old African proverb states, "He who has help has hope, and he who has hope has everything.”  A valuable life lesson has been learned and hearts have grown decidedly bigger. When we take the time to look at “what’s right,” we often realize that we really do have everything.

Coyote Pride
Positive; Responsible; Inclusive; Dependable; Engaged
The Aspen Creek community has been working hard on showing our Coyote PRIDE this year. When adults in the building "catch" a child showing PRIDE qualities, the student is rewarded with a PRIDE paw (elementary level) or PRIDE pack ticket (middle level). The students put the tickets in a box in the main office and are eligible for receiving a prize. Every other week, five middle level tickets and five elementary tickets are drawn. Students are recognized during the morning announcements and get to pick a prize. We hope you'll join us and support the PRIDE behaviors at home as well as at school.

Student Pick-up and Drop Off
Please exercise patience and courtesy, and help us keep traffic moving by parking only in designated parking spots. Use the circles in both the front and the back as pick-up/drop-off lanes only and please don't park or stand in these areas. If you are picking up a student, we ask that you meet your student at the outside door of the classroom or outside the front doors. If we become too comfortable to seeing large numbers of adults in our building, it becomes easy for strangers to slip by unnoticed.
