First Grade
In first grade, students are gently introduced to more structured learning activities. This is the beginning of a three-year journey with teacher and students. The first grader participates daily in a balanced literacy program where reading and writing are integrated through the curriculum. The year begins with a focus on family and community - classroom, school-wide, and beyond - before moving into the indigenous cultures of North America and Africa. While studying science and math, hands-on learning activities are used to promote integrated learning. For example, students study the work of artist Alexander Calder, using this as inspiration to draw plans for and construct a balanced mobile. Additionally, each child learns to knit and play the recorder. By the end of the year, the students have forged a strong community to support learning and exploring together for the next two years.
