Boulder High Cross Country
"Some people dream of success, while others wake up and work hard at it."

The Tradition

❖ The Boulder High Girls' Cross Country teams have qualified for the State Championship every year of the sport's existence, except in 1992 and 2002. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the team has finished second place at the State Meet six different times. Last year's team finished second at Regionals, and were 6th at the State Championship.

❖ In the past fifteen years the Boulder High Boys' Cross Country teams have qualified for the State Championship all but two times. Last year's team finished second at Regionals, and were 7th at the State Championship.

Happenings since XC season

Samantha Lewis is the national champion for high school girls in snowshoeing. She traveled to Syracuse, NY over the March 6 weekend and won convincingly. Congrats Sammy!

Kelsey Lakowske finished 6th in the XC National Championship in San Diego, CA. Following the season Kelsey was awarded Gatorade Runner of the Year for Colorado, and the Sportswomen of Colorado Award in the sport of cross country. Yeah Kelsy!

Ashi Guiles ran in the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho in the 1600 meters. In the preliminary heat Ashi ran a fast 4:32, and unfortunately was tangled up with another runner during the final and finished in 4:42. He's looking for a fast outdoor season.

Dominic Cabada ran a couple of fast times this winter as he was out visiting Black Hills State in South Dakota. He competed in the 1600 and ran 4:45, then completed the 3200 in 10:10. Another guy who is ready for the track season!

Coach Prue Daniels left Boulder right after the XC season to go work the ski season in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Unfortunately, Prue tore her ACL early on and has had surgery to fix her injury. She has kept up her positive spirit, and continues to work up in Jackson Hole.

Coach Andrew McCartin will graduate from the University of Colorado in May, and has already found a job with Lockheed Martin. Way to go Andrew!

Upcoming

April 7 - Meet the Coaches Night for incoming 9th graders, Boulder High, 7 pm.

Sometime in May - Team meeting to plan summer events and decide on the team t-shirt for next season.

June 1 - Start summer running for XC.

Program overview

Cross Country is a terrific sport for people of all abilities. It is a no-cut sport where some people get to showcase their terrific running talent, while others may use the season to get in shape for another sport or to connect with a great group of people. The coaches will be committed to creating workouts and an atmosphere where the goals of all the athletes are met. Workouts will be individualized based on fitness level, caliber of racing, previous running experience, and goals for the season. Every year the cross-country team is composed of students who tend to have high grades, participate in a broad array of extra-curricular activities, and invest in both their sport and the people on the team. Boulder High has an illustrious tradition of producing some of the best distance runners in the state.

Requirements to begin practice:

  1. Complete parent permission/insurance form.
  2. Read and complete the Athletic Code of Conduct.
  3. Get a physical. This must be less than one year old, and be good the whole season. Get this done early in the summer!!
  4. Pay the participation fee ($135.00).
  • Athletic registration will be done in conjunction with school registration on August 10th & 11th
  • Another athletic registration time will be August 12 from 2:00-4:00.
  • Look on the BVSD website to download the athletic packet, or pick-up packets at BHS on August 3 or later.
  • Give your receipt to Monique Guidry on the first day of practice.

How to prepare for XC

  • During the summer we will have voluntary practices Monday-Thursday at 7:30 a.m.
  • The voluntary practices are an excellent way to join in with other teammates to train together, get to know one another, and keep each other going during the hot summer months.
  • See the Pre-Season Information packet PDF for more information about our program and how to prepare.

Equipment Checklist:

  1. Your shoes should be designed for running and have very little wear on them. This piece of equipment may be the most critical element in maintaining your health.
  2. Each day wear and bring proper clothing for the conditions. This may mean lightweight clothes at the beginning of the season, while later in the season it may mean wearing a jacket, hat and gloves.
  3. Bring a water bottle every day to practice.
