Camouflage

By Amy E.

Some caterpillers have the same color as a green cabbage leaf. They may be the same color as a twig or bark. This is the way that they protect themselves from enemies. The Geometrid Caterpiller is one caterpillar that uses camouflage to protect itself. It is shaped like a twig. The end of its body has claspers. The claspers help the caterpillar to hang on to the twig and so it looks like it is a twig.

A butterfy's wings help to protect its body. The butterfly has spots and patterns that distract birds. The wings are also a quick way for the the butterfly to escape. It quickly flashes open its wings to show four large eyes.

I got my information from two books: THE BUTTERFLY IN THE GARDEN, and BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS.
