The Atlas Moth

By Bryce C.

Did you know that the Atlas Moth is the one of the biggest moths on Earth? The Atlas Moth larva is 11 inches long and the Atlas Moth adult has a wingspan of 12 inches! This moth is so big it is often mistaken for a small bird when it is flying! The Atlas Moth's cocoon looks like a piece of fruit hanging from a tree. The silk from its cocoon is strong and durable and is used to make clothing. Even this huge moth has predators. It uses the snake-like markings on its back to scare away predators. This gigantic moth lives in the jungles of the Far East and Indonesia.

I got some of this information from BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS.
