In the fall of 1996, the first annual "symbolic monarch butterfly migration"
was launched by Journey North in collaboration with Mexico City's Museo del Nino
(Children's Museum) and museums and schools in North America.
Students in 2/3 and 3rd grades at Coal Creek joined students across the United
States and Canada to create a total of 40,000 paper butterflies which
"migrated" to Mexico with the help of UPS Express. This spring (1997), envelopes arrived with the same number of butterflies we sent to Mexico--but they weren't the ones we made. They were created by children in Mexico. Some of the butterflies we received illustrate the poems on this page.
INSECTS by Alisa T.
Insects, insects, insects
There are insects, insects,
Everywhere.
Insects live in little houses,
Just the same as we do.
Insects are so cool.
I wish I was an insect
I would rule the would.
I would fly from place
To place and never stop.
It would be so fun except for the eating part.
BUTTERFLIES
By Madison P.
Butterflies, butterflies are very pretty.
They are so pretty they make me silly!
Red, yellow, orange and blue! I wouldn't try to catch one if I were you.
THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY
by Kayla A.
From a tiny egg to a beautiful orange and black Monarch,
As it awakens from its long sleep,
It opens the most amazing chapter of its life.
From the north to the high mountains of Mexico,
The Monarch will go, sending back its grandchildren,
To do the same.
So if you see something in the sky,
It could be a Monarch Butterfly.
WILDFLOWERS AT DUSK
by Lisa L.
Run outside quick,
The grass isn't slick.
See the pretty flowers,
In the morning hours.
Blossoming everywhere,
They make a lovely lair.
Pretty blue and yellow,
Never make me mellow.
Alarm clocks ringing,
Meadow larks singing.
The time to enjoy is over.
BUTTERFLIES
by Paige C.
Butterflies here and butterflies there.
Butterflies everywhere.
Monarchs migrating and moths jigrating.
Flying and fluttering that is a butterfly.
A butterfly is beautiful and is playful in a way.
A butterfly is wild, so don' t keep it as a pet.
BUTTERFLIES

Butterfly, butterfly above,
I want to catch you.
Butterflies here and there,
Butterflies everywhere.
So colorful and new,
I don`t now which one to chose.
Red and blue, I want you.
Black and white you are nice.
Yellow and green,
Too many to chose from.
I love them all!
ROLEY-POLEY
by Shanna F
Roly-poly dressed in gray.
Roly-poly roles all day.
Cause when I try to play with him
What does he do?
He roles away .

And a worm for a midnight munch.
