Moth Scales and Wings

By Carl P.

Did you know moth wings are see-through? They are made of a clear membrane that is covered with scales. The scales give the wings color and they make it so moths can fly. Once scales are lost, they won't grow back. Moth scales look furry like an animal. Butterflies scales look like the shingles on a roof. Moths have two pairs of wings. One pair is hidden by the other ones. If a moth's wings rip then they can't fly. Moths and butterflies must stay under leaves or their wings will get ripped in the rain or their scales will get washed off.

I got my information from EYEWITNESS: NATURAL WORLD.
