Let's go back in time to the time of the dinosaurs. Look, what's that? Is it a baby dinosaur with wings? No, it's a butterfly! WOW, I didn't know butterflies lived in the time of the dinosaurs, did you? Let's go to the library and find some books about butterflies and their history on earth. Oh, look, butterflies and moths have lived on earth for millions of years. Even though dinosaurs died out, butterflies still survived. Butterflies can sip little drops of water and don't eat as much as dinosaurs, so they survived. Dinosaurs and butterflies lived together for at least 10 million years. I never knew that moths first appeared on earth between 100 and 190 million years ago. Did you know butterflies evolved later than moths? I bet you can't guess when butterflies appeared on earth. Butterflies appeared on earth about 75 million years ago. At first butterflies did not have any wings! Today butterflies are found just about everywhere you can imagine. Butterflies can live everywhere, but they mostly live in forests, deserts, and jungles. Did you know that butterflies are even found in the North Pole? The only place where butterflies don't live is in Antarctica.
I found my information in a book called DISCOVER BUTTERFLIES.
