Exotic Caterpillars

By Jonathan R.

A procession is a parade. The Processionary caterpillars seem to love a parade. They play follow the leader wherever they go. The first caterpillar to leave the nest spins a trail of silk. The second caterpillar spins some silk on top of the first. This goes on all the way to the back of the line. Unlike many species of caterpillars Sweet Oils like to feed in a big group. Owl caterpillars are less noticeable along the rib of a plant. Bright stripes act as a warning to enemies. Some Swallowtail caterpillars rear up in a threatening manner if disturbed. Cracker caterpillars have black head horns and long spines. One odd way for a caterpillar to get away from a lizard is that it might drop to the ground.

I got my information from some books called BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS and CREEPY, CRAWLY CATERPILLARS.
