Behavior of Moths

Did you know that there are about 8,000 different species of moths in North America? And they all have different behavior. How about this? The Blue Underwing Moth has real ears on the sides of its wings that helps it to hear the squeaks of bats. If it hears a bat coming, it will drop to the ground or dodge out of the way. If an enemy disturbs the Red Underwing Moth, it opens and closes it's wings. The bright flash of red may frighten the enemy. The Tiger Moth makes clicking noises at night, bats and birds soon learn that moths that make clicking noises taste bad.

A moth hides during the day. At dusk it shivers to warm itself, then it drinks nectar from a flower. After the moth warms up, he flies away to find a female to mate with. Then he goes to find a great place to sleep for the day where he will be safe. Wow, some behavior!

I got my information from the books: BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS, AMAZING WORLD OF BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS, and A CLOSER LOOK AT BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS.
