Raising Painted Lady Butterflies

April 24
The Painted Lady caterpillars arrived. They came in a jar. They were so little we accidently put two in one plastic cup. In the cups there was this disgusting green stuff which was caterpillar food. It didn't smell good to us but it tasted and smelled good to the caterpillars.
April 30
They kept eating and eating and eating and getting bigger and fatter. They left a lot of poo in the cup.
May 1
When Mr. Harris was putting a caterpillar into a container he dropped one and a silk thread came out. The thread was about 12" long and it was very shiny. Inside the cups they spun webs with this silk. Then they started to hang upside down from the lid.
May 2
When they were getting ready to go into the chrysalis they made a "J" shape. When we left school on Friday the caterpillars were hanging upside down like bats.
May 5
Then on Monday when we came to school they had turned into chrysalides. Mr. Harris taped the lids with the chrysalides to the top of the butterfly pavilion. Beth's chrysalis fell onto the floor of the cage. Even though it didn't hang from the top of the cage, it still hatched. But its wing was stuck to the ground. It was on its side with one wing flapping and then it managed to get up. Finally it was able to get up and fly around with the others.
May 10
When Mikey's and Sara's chrysalides were put into the cage they were shaking and wriggling from side-to-side. Mikey's hatched, but Sara's didn't. Sara's was wriggling a lot more. Maybe it used too much energy and so it didn't have enough to break out of the chrysalis.
May 11
When they hatched they were flapping their wings very slowly. Then they went faster and faster.
May 11
The red stuff that came out of their abdomen was waste from inside the chyrsalis.
May 14
In Ms McIntosh's class one of the butterflies got out of the cage so they put it in a jar. There was one that was half hatched and it died. There was one that was having alot of trouble getting out of the chrysalis so Ms McIntosh helped it. But the juice never got in its wings so it died.

May 16
Two of the butterflies in Ms McIntosh's room mated. Their class didn't release their
butterflies until a week after we did because they hoped the butterflies would lay eggs.

May 13
We took the butterfly pavilion to the ditch down the hill from school. We took them to that place because there are lots of plants and flowers for them to eat.
May 13
Mr Harris opened up the net on the cage and about half of them flew away. Everybody clapped and said good bye.
May 13
There was one that didn't want to fly away. Kathryn picked it up and it flew to Chelsee's hair and Julianne picked it up and it flew back to Chelsee. Then Julianne picked it up and set it by the water on the ground. A bird circled over it and then dived down and ate it.

May 13
People had to pick up some of them with their fingers.
When we gave them a little nudge, they flew away.

May 13
It was sad saying good-bye to the butterflies because we raised them since they were babies.
May 13
We have seen Painted Ladies flying around in our neighborhood. We've also seen two caterpillars. We hope they are the babies of our butterflies.
