Fritillary Butterflies

Did you think that fritillary means striped? Well, it doesn't. It means spotted. The spots are like little mirrors when they shine in the sun. Fritillary butterflies love violets and passion flowers. Just so you know, the fritillary eggs are laid on the ground and the caterpillars search for violet plants. There are over 17 kinds of fritillary. The Diana Fritillary is the largest found in North America. Its wingspan is 3.8 inches. Fritillary butterflies warm up in the sun. And most live in the mountains.

I got this information from a book called BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS AROUND THE WORLD.
