Mourning Cloak Butterfly

Do you know how a tiny egg turns into a Mourning Cloak Butterfly? The Mourning Cloak caterpillar hatches out of an egg. It eats and eats. It molts many times. The Mourning Cloak caterpillar wriggles out of its skin. The Mourning Cloak caterpillar attaches itself to a twig by a stalk of silk and hangs upside down. The Mourning Cloak is now in the chrysalis. The chrysalis looks like a dead leaf. Other animals leave it alone. Many changes are taking place inside the chrysalis. In early spring, the adult insect comes out of the chrysalis. It is now a beautiful brown Mourning cloak butterfly. This butterfly makes a clicking sound when a predaator comes near. It also hibernates in the winter.

I got my information from LIFE OF A BUTTERFLY.
