American Copper Butterfly

The American Copper is very small but aggressive. They attack larger butterflies and small birds so they can eat the food by themselves. Their wing span is 1.5 inches wide. They live in the northeastern United States in open grassy areas. The caterpillar of the American Copper Butterfly lives on a plant called Sheep Sorrel. This is the caterpillar's favorite food. The flowers on it are yellow or red. The American Copper Butterfly was named for the red-orange color of its wings. Another name for the American Copper is the Copper Ducet. The American Copper's habitat is getting destroyed by people.

I got my information from MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES by Dave Beaty.
