Exoskeleton

Wow! Did you know that the exoskeleton of a caterpillar is made of layers of horny material called chiten? I wonder why the organs are inside, instead of the outside? Want another fact? Well, the exoskeleton keeps the caterpillar or butterfly from drying out! Here's another fact. In order to grow the caterpillar has to shed it's exoskeleton. Another name for exoskeleton is outside skeleton. The exoskeleton is light-weight but very strong. When a caterpillar breaks out of it's exoskeleton it is called molting. The exoskeleton cannot expand. So as the caterpillar grows and gets bigger it must molt.

I got my information from INSECTS and AMAZING BUGS.
