Coal Creek - Isabella Bird
Isabella Lucy Bird (1831-1904)
by Maddie, age 9 and Lauren, age 9

Isabella Lucy Bird wrote a travel book about her journey to Colorado and Long's Peak. Lots of people learned about Colorado from her book.

Lady Isabella Bird was born in 1831 in Yorkshire, England. She had a sister named Henrietta. Isabella was a sickly child. Her father was a minister and died of sickness and her mother died of sickness also.

Isabella seemed to have two personalities. When she was at home in England she was sick, but when she traveled she was healthy and energetic. At home she was very bored and because of that we think that's why she got sick. She had to travel for her mental health. She was a grand traveler and traveled all over the world. Isabella went to Morocco, India, Japan, Korea, Colorado, and more places. When she was in Colorado she climbed Long's peak.

Lady Isabella wrote letters to her sister about her adventures while she was in Colorado in 1873. One time she tried to go to Estes Park but got lost and had to find her way back. She got bucked off her horse and broke her arm. She stayed on a ranch owned by Mr. Evans where she worked for money to travel back to England.

On October 7, 1904 Isabella Bird died in Edinburgh, Scotland.
