Scott Carpenter was born in Boulder, Colorado in 1925. He went to school in Boulder and attended the University of Colorado where he got a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
In 1949 he joined the navy and became a pilot. He fought
in the Korean War.
In
1959 he was one of the original seven astronauts picked to go into space.
In 1962 he was the second astronaut to fly a rocket ship. The rocket was
called Mercury-Atlas 7 and he called his spacecraft the Aurora 7. He went
around the earth three times and it took him 4 hours and 54 minutes.
He retired from the navy in 1969. There is a school in Boulder named after his spacecraft. It is called Aurora 7 Elementary School.
