Kit Carson (1809 - 1868)
by Kyle, age 8 and Ryan, age 9

Did you know that Kit Carson fought in the Civl War? I bet you did not.

Kit Carson's real name was Christopher Carson. He was 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 125 pounds. He was small in size and tall in courage.

One day a bully named Sunar said, "Whipping Americans is like taking a switch to children."

Kit Carson didn't like that and he said, "I do not like such talk from any man." They started to fight and Sunar jumped on his horse and rode away.

Kit was born in 1809 on Christmas Eve in Madison County, Kentucky. He died on May 23, 1868 of illness.

Kit was the 9th or 14 children. When he was 1 year old, his family moved to Boon's Lick, Missouri. His father died from a falling tree limb when Kit was 9 years old. Kit was an apprentice to a saddlemaker. He did not like the job and he ran away to become a mountain man when he was 17.

Kit worked for William Bent as the chief hunter at Bent's Fort. Later he was hired by John C. Fremont to be a guide. Kit was famous for guiding people over the mountains. Fremont took notes about Kit's adventures. Someone else wrote books about Kit and that is how he became famous.
