Jack
Dempsey is famous because he was the heavy weight boxing champion of the
world for seven years. He was one of the greatest boxers in the country.
Willard Harrison "Jack" Dempsey was born in 1895 in Manassa, Colorado. In 1911 he began boxing in small mining towns of Colorado under the name of "Kid Blackie." He did this until 1916. By the time he was 24 years old he had won 80 professional fights.
In 1919 he fought Jess Willard for the heavy weight title. This fight was like the fight between David and Goliath. Jack was David and Jess was Goliath. Guess who won? Jack did! He was the heavy weight champion of the world for seven years.
Then he lost his title. In 1926 Gene Tunney defeated Jack. He hoped to get his title back. A year later they went head to head but Jack lost again. For several years he gave boxing exhibitions and then he quit boxing in 1940.
When he quit boxing he went to New York and opened a restaurant. He died in 1983.
Jack Dempsey was considered a perfect boxer and people loved to see him.
