John Evans started the University of Denver and was the
second governor of the Colorado Territory.
Evans was born on March 9, 1814 in Waynesville, Ohio.
John's dad didn't want John to go to school and become a doctor. Despite
his father, John became a doctor.
He moved to Chicago, which was small then, in 1848 and invented new tools for doctors. Near a small lake close to Chicago, John started Northwestern University. The town around the lake later became known as Evanston.
In 1862 John Evans was asked, by Abraham Lincoln, to be the second governor of the Colorado Territory. He was fired because of being accused of starting the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864.
Dr. Evans started the University of Denver in 1865.
Sadly, John died on June 9, 1897 on Mt. Evans at 4:30 p.m. The town of Evanston, Illinois and Mt. Evans are named after him.
