Mary Harris (Mother) Jones (1830-1930)

Mother Jones protested the way miners were treated. She was willing to risk her life for them.

Mary Harris Jones was born May 1, 1830 near Cork, Ireland. Her family moved to Toronto, Canada when she was 8 years old.

Before she got married Mary was a school teacher. In 1861 she married George Jones. They lived in Memphis, Tennessee. Her husband and children died of yellow fever in 1867. Then she moved to Chicago and became a seamstress. Her house and business burned down in a fire in 1871.  After that she started helping workers.
 

Mother Jones walked in many important parades. She made many important speeches. She fought for working people in factories and mines. She took care of miner's children. She helped to form a radical labor organization.

In 1914 she came to Colorado to help the miners in Ludlow. She got in trouble with the governor and was put in jail, but she got out and went right back to help the miners.

She died in 1930 a few days after her 100th birthday.
