Margaret (Molly) Tobin Brown (1867-1932)

Molly Brown was born in a poor family and she grew up to be famous all over the United States. What did she do to become famous?

Margaret Tobin  was born July 18, 1867 in Hannibal, Missouri. She had red hair. She loved her father's songs and stories. When she was 17 Molly moved to Leadville, Colorado to live with her brother, Daniel. She got a job as a waitress for the miners. Then she was hired to sing in a concert hall. The miners loved her singing and threw money up on the stage.

Margaret Tobin married J.J. Brown in Leadville. He was the owner of a gold mine and he was rich. They bought a big house in Denver and moved there with their children, Helen and Lawrence. She went to Europe many times. 

One time when she was in Europe she heard about a new ship called the Titanic that was the best ship ever made. Molly bought a ticket on the Titanic. One night on the Titanic there was a big BOOM!  Everybody awoke. The Titanic got a big scrape on the side of the ship. Molly Brown got on the 6th life boat. No one was calm. "I do not plan on drowning at sea," said Molly. She distracted everyone from thinking that they were about to die. She sang songs and people enjoyed her singing. When everybody got off the lifeboat they thanked her for helping save their lives. Molly Brown became famous. She told a newspaper reporter, "Just call me unsinkable."

Molly Brown moved to New York City. She died of old age in 1932.
