Notable People in the History of Colorado and the American West

1776 - Silvestre Velez de Escalante (?-?) is famous because he was the first Spanish man to go from Santa Fe to California on horseback and he wrote a journal about his adventures. by Camille and Alison

1804 - Sacagawea (1790-1812 or 1884) is famous because she was the first Shoshone person to leave her tribe and go to the Pacific Ocean with the Lewis and Clark expedition. by Richard and Nikki

1806 - Zebulon Pike (1779 -1813) is famous because he discovered a mountain that is 14,110 feet tall and now it is called Pike's Peak. by Sydney and Victoria

1830 - Jim Bridger (1804-1881) is famous because he discovered and explored many places before any other white man. by Meredith and Brock

1833 - William Bent (1809-1869) is famous because he and his brother, Charles, built and ran a magnificent, massive fort made out of adobe on the Santa Fe Trail where everybody traded. by Phoebe and Jason

1843 - Kit Carson (1809-1868) is famous because he guided John C. Fremont over the mountains. by Ryan M. and Kyle

1850 - James Beckwourth (1798-1866) is famous because he was a mountain man who found an easy way through the Sierra Nevada Mountains so settlers could get to California. by Taylor and Kyle

1856 - (Aunt) Clara Brown (1800?-1885) is famous because she was the first official black woman pioneer in Colorado. by Aila and Jonathan

1859 - Horace Greeley (1811-1872) is famous because he prepared a report on the Colorado gold rush and put it in his paper, The New York Times . by Ali and Travis

1859 - William Byers (1831-1903) is famous because he published the first newspeper in Denver called the Rocky Mountain News. by Rebecca and Kim

1863 - Ouray (1833-1880) is famous because he signed the peace treaty that protected the Ute's land and freedom. by Sarah and Steven

1864  - Black Kettle (?? - 1868) is famous because he worked for peace between the white settlers and the Cheyenne even after the Sand Creek Massacre. by Zlata and Adri

1860's-Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) is famous because he painted beautiful pictures of landscapes of the west. by Jennifer and Sam

1865 - John Evans (1814-1897) is famous because he started the University of Denver and he was the second governor of the Colorado territory. by Nigel and Tabitha

1866 - Charles Goodnight (1836-1929) is famous because he and Oliver Loving started the first cattle driving trail which is known as the Goodnight-Loving Trail. by Kalene and Eric

1868 - David Moffat (1839-1911) is famous because he built the first railroad to Denver and the Moffat Tunnel was named for him. by Brian and Kirk

1869 - Charles Crocker (1822-1888) is famous because he managed the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad and he thought of using Chinese immigrants for labor. by John F. and Amanda A.

1869 - John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) is famous because he was the first white man to ever explore the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. by Katie and Jasmine

1871 - William J. Palmer (1836-1909) is famous because he started the town of Colorado Springs and he built railroads up into the mountains. by Scott and Adam

1872 - William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) is famous because he took many photographs of the beautiful and unknown places in Colorado and the west. by Mariah and Corey

1872 - William (Buffalo Bill) Cody (1846-1917) is famous because he was a showman and started his very own show called the Wild West Show He traveled all over the world. by Aqil and Alexa

1873 - Isabella Bird (1831-1904) is famous because she wrote a travel book about her journey to Colorado and Long's Peak. by Lauren and Madeline

1876 - Tatanka Iyotake Sitting Bull (1831-1890) is famous because he was a great chief and fought for freedom although it never happened. by Jacque and Shelby

1876 - Tashunca-witco Crazy Horse (1849-1877) is famous because he led a war party at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. by Ryan and David

1879 - Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) is famous because she wrote two books to show people how the Indians were mistreated. by Hein and Nathan

1879 - Nathan C. Meeker (1817-1879) is famous because he started the Union Colony in Greeley and he was murdered by the Utes. by Claire and Brodi

1883 - Sarah Winnemucca (1844-1891) is famous because she is the first Indian woman to write and publish a book. She could speak 5 languages. by John M. and Erica A.

1883 - Baby Doe Tabor (1854-1935) is famous because she was married to Horace Tabor and got rich because of his mines but then she died poor. by AnnMarie and Bretton

1886 - Otto Mears (1840-1931) is famous because he built 5 roads and 2 railroads. He is called the Pathfinder of the San Juans. by Rachel and Samantha

1891 - Winfield S. Stratton (1816-1902) is famous because he split open a huge rock and found all sorts of gold you can ever imagine on July 4th, Independence Day, and became very rich. by Thuc and Aaron

1893 - Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) is famous because she wrote the poem "America the Beautiful". She got inspired when she climbed Pikes Peak. by Joey and Heidi

1912 - Margaret Tobin (Molly) Brown (1867-1932) is famous because she helped save other lives and her own life on the Titanic. by Carmen and Kali

1914 - Mary Harris (Mother) Jones (1830-1930) is famous because she protested the way miners were treated. She was willing to risk her life for them. by Leesa and Gavin

1915 - Enos Mills (1870-1922) is famous because he worked hard to start Rocky Mountain National Park. by David and James

1916 - Emily Griffith (1868-1947) is famous because she opened an opportunity school for those who wanted to learn. by Autumn and Alyssa

1919 - William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey (1895-1983) is famous because he was heavy weight boxing champion for seven years and he was one of the greatest boxers in the country. by Carly and Sara M.

1930 - Lon Chaney (1883-1930) is famous because he was the "Man of a Thousand Faces" in silent movies like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame. by Natalie and Rachel

1941 - Glenn Miller (1904-1944) is famous because he was one of the greatest musicians and band leaders. by Rosie and Shawn

1943 - Arleigh Burke (1901-1995) is famous because he was a very good leader for the U.S. Navy. He was so good he was and admiral and they named a ship after him. by Vanessa and Yvonne

1944 - Florence R. Sabin (1871-1953) is famous because she was medical researcher and she helped people in Colorado to stay healthy. by  Shane and Ashley

1950 - Justina Ford (1871-1952) is famous because for 48 years she was the only African American female doctor in Colorado. She delivered between 5,000 and 7,000 babies. by Chris E. and Brysen D.

1962 - Byron White (1917-2002) is famous because he was the first Coloradoan appointed to be a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. by Michael R. and Nathan

1963 - Scott Carpenter (1925-) is famous because he was he is one of the first astronauts to travel around the earth three times. His spaceship was called the Aurora 7. by Maggie and Griffin

1970 - John L. "Jack" Swigert (1931-1982) is famous because he was an astronaut and was elected to the House of Representatives from Colorado.
