Sitting Bull was born in 1830 on the plains of North America in what is now called South Dakota. Hunkeshnee was Sitting Bull's Sioux name. It meant slow. Sitting Bull had lots of names. Another Sioux name was Tatanka Iyotake. His American name was Sitting Bull as we call him.
The Sioux lived in North Dakota and South Dakota. They moved to Canada for four years then moved back to the plains in North and South Dakota.
From early years Sitting Bull was admired for his courage, wisdom and generosity. Sitting Bull had many friends because he was such a great chief. Some of his friends were Crazy Horse and Gall. They were chiefs too.
Sitting Bull was a great hunter. He killed his first buffalo when he was only ten. Sitting Bull also won the battle of honor award when he was fourteen.
Sitting Bull was in the Hunkpapa tribe of the Sioux nation. The Sioux tribe moved from place to place following the buffalo to hunt. Sitting Bull was a great courageous Sioux chief who was brave. He would work hard for freedom. He thought very carefully. Sitting Bull was one of the greatest of all Sioux leaders.
The Little Big Horn is a battle that Sitting Bull is famous for because he led his tribe through it strongly. After the battle many tribes went their own ways.
Sitting Bull died when soldiers came to arrest Sitting
Bull. His brother tried to protect him but accidently shot his gun by mistake.
So the soldiers started shooting back. They killed Sitting Bull, his brother,
his son and twelve other people.
