Mayflower Voyage and Plymouth

Audience:

4th grade Social Studies classes studying Colonial America.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

Materials:

Access to the World Wide Web

Library resources about the Mayflower Voyage

Procedure:

1. Have students use a 3-column note format to record information to answer the three focus questions (below). The three categories for their notes should be source(http address for sites used, title and author of any books used), notes, and questions they still have. You will have to model this format by reading a short passage from a trade book or modeling using one of the online sites.

2. Students will explore the sites from the list of Mayflower and Plymouth links.

3. You will also want to supplement these sites with your library book resources, any videos and CD-Roms that you may have access to.

4. Once students are able to answer each of the focus questions (below) have them write a short summary paragraph to answer each question.

Focus Questions:

1. What were the different groups of people who were on the Mayflower?

2. Why were each group coming to America?

3. What were the hardships and problems that they were faced with both in their travels and in the start of their settlement?

Conclusion:

Have students share their summaries with their classmates. Create a class summary including all of the different information that was found by all students.
