Virtual Tour of Early America

As you visit historic sites in America you will collect pictures and information to create your own virtual tour.

1. Scroll down the entire timeline. Select a time period or topic of special interest to you. Your mission is to become an expert on this topic.

2. Look at all the pictures at the site you choose. Using your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) bookmark the pictures that you especially like.

3. Select five of your favorite pictures and write at least one fact about each. To do this in Netscape, follow these steps:

1565 - St. Augustine established

Pedro Menendez de Aviles and 800 soldiers and settlers reached the location of present-day St. Augustine in 1565. St. Augustine became the first permanent European settlement in what is now the United States.


1585 - Lost Colony of Roanoke

Sir Walter Raleigh set up England's first colony in North America. In July 1585 colonists landed on an island just off the coast of what is now North Carolina. In less than a year the colony failed. The colonists did not know how to survive in their new environment and returned to England. A second colony was established in the same place in 1587. This group mysteriously disappeared and no one knows what happened to them.


1607 - Jamestown

Jamestown Rediscovery is a ten-year archaeology project searching for the remains of the original fort of Jamestown on 22.5 acres of Jamestown Island, Virginia that is owned by the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.

1626 - New Amsterdam


1695 - Castillo de San Marcos, Florida

The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest European fort built of stone blocks in the United States. It is located in the town of St. Augustine, Florida. Building of the Castillo began on October 2, 1672, and was mostly complete by 1695. The Castillo has been in place since its completion in 1695, and was used as an active military post until 1900. The Castillo was never taken by force.To see a good aerial photograph of the fort today click here.


1722 - New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans was one of the first towns in New France and became the capital of the colony in 1722.


1738 - Ft. Mose, Florida

Fort Mose is the site of the first legally sanctioned free black settlement in North America. It was established by Governor Manuel Montiano in 1738 giving sanctury, freedom and land to Africans formerly enslaved in English Carolina. Destroyed in the English attack in 1740, a second Fort Mose was constructed near the site of the first in 1752. There former Africans slaves from English Colonies lived as free people until 1763, when most moved to Cuba. Ft. Mose is a National Historic Landmark located near St. Augustine .


1764 - Walk The Freedom Trail in Boston

The Puritans began building their chief town, Boston, in about 1630. Boston became the center of much of the unrest that led to the Revolutionary War after the Sugar Act of 1764.


1768 - Spanish Missions in California

Building a series of missions along the coast of California was the idea of King Charles III of Spain. Priests and Native American workers began bulding the missions in 1768.


1776 - Colonial Philadelphia

This tour includes Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Graff House where Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and several other buildings in Philadelphia's historic mile.


1777 - The Betsy Ross House, Philadelphia
