Information and Expectations
for 5th graders
The following information is important
for your child's success in 5th grade.
TEAM TEACHING
We believe that team teaching is a vital
step in preparing students for the transition to middle school.
Team Teaching allows us to offer students more depth in subject
areas. It also gives your child exposure to the practice
of changing classes and interacting with several teachers.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
1.
Respect the rights, feelings, and beliefs of others
2. Take responsibility for finishing
school work and homework
3. Follow classroom and school rules
It is essential that we
help children learn to take RESPONSIBILITY for their actions
and work. As part of the transition to middle school
it is important that the RESPONSIBILITY for communication
and assignments shift primarily to the student. The
role of parent and teacher is to help the student fully realize
this RESPONSIBILITY.
HOMEWORK POLICY
We believe that homework is an essential
part of your child's education. A major focus of Fifth
Grade is teaching students to take more responsibility for
their schoolwork, particularly completing and turning in assignments.
Missing or late assignments will effect student's grades.
Generally homework is due the day after it is assigned.
However, there will be on-going assignments that may be due
at a later date. Such assignments will require students
to manage their time wisely. One way to help your child
manage their homework is to review their planner with them
regularly and check the web site calendar. Failure to
turn in homework when due with result in the student staying
in for recess that day and after school if need be.
Students will call home if they need to stay after school.
If your child is ill and needs to be at home, don't worry
about the homework that day. However, it will be the
responsibility of the student to get the missed assignments
when they return. She/He will have two days to complete
and turn in the assignments.
GRADING SYSTEM
The grading system for students consists
of four grades. The purpose of the grading system is
to help children evaluate their work.
E = Excellent
V = Very Good
S = Satisfactory
N = Needs Improvement
FRIDAY FOLDERS
The majority of the children's work
will be sent home in a folder on Friday. In it you will
find a place for parent's comments and signature. Please
try to find some time to go over your child's work with them,
sign the folder, and send it back on the following Monday.
This should help to keep parents and teachers informed about
our child's progress.
Sincerely,
Sara McIntosh
