The Civil War for Kids
Students in Mrs. Huber's class at Pocantico Hills School in Sleepy Hollow, New York studied the Civil War, and then created a web site summarizing everything they learned including an illustrated Timeline, The Emancipation Proclamation, Uniforms, and the Biographies of Civil War Leaders.

Africans in America
This PBS site is a multi-part history of slavery in America. Each part consists of a narrative, a resource list and a teacher's guide. The Civil War (covering 1831 to 1865) is the fourth and final part of the series.

Sites on Specific Topics

Annie Burton, Childhood Memories of a Slave
Annie, was one of 14 slave children on an Alabama plantation when the Civil War began. As an adult she went to school. A teacher encouraged her to write her memories of the plantation. The first 15 pages tell about life during and immediately after the war. Includes a photograph of Annie.

Battle of Gettysburg
Tillie Pierce, a 15 year old school girl, watched Union and Confederate troops clash in her home town and published her memories of the event. This site also includes photographs and maps of the battle.

Civil War Flags
Union and Confederate flags flown from 1861 to 1865.

General Robert E. Lee
This site recalls the triumphs of the first year of General Lee's command from June 1861 to June 1862. It includes letters, quotes and reports. Robert E. Lee A photograph and brief outline of Lee's life and military career.

The Emancipation Proclamation
Contains images of the original document that Lincoln issued on January 1, 1863, a transcript of the text and historical notes explaining the effects of the proclamation on the country.

Rose O'Neal Greenhow, Confederate Spy
"Wild Rose", as she was called from a young age, was a leader in Washington society and one of the most renowned spies of the Civil War. This site contains both scanned images and transcripts of her letters as well as a photograph of Rose.

Battle of Antietam
September 17, 1862 was the bloodiest day in American combat history with over 23,000 casualties. Lt. Frederick Hitchcock, a member of the 132d Pennsylvania Volunteers and David Thompson, a member of the 9th N.Y. volunteers, describe their experiences at this battle. Includes photographs and maps.

Battle of Gettysburg
The turning point of the American Civil War occurred at the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863.

General Ulysses S. Grant
Corporal M. Harrison Strong of the 72nd Illinois Regiment was Grant's adjutant during the war. He wrote a description of Grant's personality and character. Includes a photograph of Grant.

Huwald's Tennessee Mountain Howitzer Battery 
The Mountain Howitzer was a large caliber gun designed on a small scale. Its size made it possible to disassemble and carry it on horses or mules. This site includes a letter written by Capt. Huwald, describing the battles around Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Battle of Fredericksburg
Chapter 3 of The Veteran's Story by R. J. Lightsey. He fought in many battles including the Battle of Fredericksburg and tells about meeting "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee.

Battle of Vicksburg and Helena
These letters are part of a collection written by Newton Robert Scott, Private, 36th Infantry, Iowa Volunteers. Most were written to Hannah Cone, a neighbor in their home town in Iowa. Click on Table of Contents to get to a list of letters. Then Click on July 6 to read about the Battle of Vicksburg and Helena.

"Duryee's Zouaves"
This New York Infantry unit was one of the most renowned fighting regiments of the war. Their colorful Zouave uniform, precise maneuvers, effectiveness in combat and steady bearing ufire won them respect and recognition.

The Gettysburg Address 
This site contains the only known photo of Lincoln at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, an image of the speech written on White House stationery in Lincoln's handwriting and images of the correspondence inviting Lincoln to speak.

Pvt. Hopkins Pratt, Alleged Deserter
In his diary, Pvt. Hopkins Pratt of the 11th Arkansas Infantry, tells of the diseases and other horrors of war endured by soldiers. Pratt went home on furlow and refused to join the fight again. He was tracked down and murdered.

Surrender at Appomattox
This site includes the letters exchanged by Lee and Grant before they met for the surrender and eyewitness accounts of the meeting. It also includes maps and photographs.

Deciphering Old Handwriting 
Not only have our words and their meanings changed throughout the years, but the way letters are written has changed also. It is often difficult to read old records because much of the writing is phonetic. This on-line tutorial includes samples from the 1800's.
