Annie
Burton, Childhood Memories of a Slave
Annie, was one of 14 slave children on an Alabama plantation
when the Civil War began. As an adult she went to school.
A teacher encouraged her to write her memories of the plantation.
The first 15 pages tell about life during and immediately
after the war. Includes a photograph of Annie.
Battle
of Gettysburg
Tillie Pierce, a 15 year old school girl, watched Union
and Confederate troops clash in her home town and published
her memories of the event. This site also includes photographs
and maps of the battle.

O'Neal Greenhow, Confederate Spy
"Wild Rose", as she was called from a young age, was a leader
in Washington society and one of the most renowned spies
of the Civil War. This site contains both scanned images
and transcripts of her letters as well as a photograph of
Rose.

September 17, 1862 was the bloodiest day in American combat
history with over 23,000 casualties. Lt. Frederick Hitchcock,
a member of the 132d Pennsylvania Volunteers and David Thompson,
a member of the 9th N.Y. volunteers, describe their experiences
at this battle. Includes photographs and maps.

The Mountain Howitzer was a large caliber gun designed on
a small scale. Its size made it possible to disassemble
and carry it on horses or mules. This site includes a letter
written by Capt. Huwald, describing the battles around Chattanooga,
Tennessee.

Chapter 3 of The Veteran's Story by R. J. Lightsey. He fought
in many battles including the Battle of Fredericksburg and
tells about meeting "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee.

These letters are part of a collection written by Newton
Robert Scott, Private, 36th Infantry, Iowa Volunteers. Most
were written to Hannah Cone, a neighbor in their home town

"Duryee's Zouaves"
This New York Infantry unit was one of the most renowned
fighting regiments of the war. Their colorful Zouave uniform,
precise maneuvers, effectiveness in combat and steady bearing
ufire won them respect and recognition.

This site contains the only known photo of Lincoln at Gettysburg
on November 19, 1863, an image of the speech written on
White House stationery in Lincoln's handwriting and images
of the correspondence inviting Lincoln to speak.

Hopkins Pratt, Alleged Deserter
In his diary, Pvt. Hopkins Pratt of the 11th Arkansas Infantry,
tells of the diseases and other horrors of war endured by
soldiers. Pratt went home on furlow and refused to join
the fight again. He was tracked down and murdered.
