WHIRLIGIG
a gallery
Be sure to check out
Coal Creek’s new art gallery, “Whirligig” located on Empathy Road
(the main hallway between the Finer Diner and the workroom.) The
gallery is off to a roaring start with new submissions coming in
every day.
WHY WHIRLIGIG?
The definition of
whirligig is “something that continually whirls.” We like to think
of it as creativity in motion, an ongoing process of exercising the
imagination.
Whirligig was born as
a replacement to an end-of-the-year art show where the children have
to wait months to see their work displayed. A rotating gallery
allows children of every ability level to have a chance to be a
displaying artist as many times as s/he would like. It follows the
habits of mind trait, “create, imagine, innovate!”
HOW IT WORKS
Artwork is mounted
and displayed for one to two weeks on the gallery wall. After the
display time, artwork is scanned for future use and returned to the
student. Plans are in the works to have an on-line anthology of
artwork that has been submitted throughout the year.
HOW TO SUBMIT
All Coal Creek
students and faculty are welcome to submit original artwork created
outside of school. Create your masterpiece from home then bring it
to the bin marked Whirligig in the art room. There are monthly
themes posted for ideas and inspiration, but it is not necessary to
submit work based on the theme. Check the gallery and the Coal Creek
newsletter for upcoming themes. We prefer original renderings to
commercial characters. Pieces with questionable or violent content
will not be displayed in the gallery.
