Activities Available During the School Day
Instrumental Music
Available for fifth grade students twice each week during the
school day.
Taught by a team of BVSD instrumental music teachers.
Library Mentors
Library Mentors are third, fourth and fifth grade students who
volunteer to assist in the library. After completing a training
course, students work in the library during recess time, helping
other students to use the computers and find books. They also
help keep the shelves in order.

Peer Mediators
Peer Mediators are students who participate in intensive professional
training to facilitate mediation, problem solving and negotiation
skills among peers.
Reading Partners Mentors
Reading Partners is a program that gives one-on-one reading support
to students. Classroom teachers recommend students for this early
intervention program to enhance reading skills.

School Store
The school store is an economic venture operated by fifth grade
students. Profits are used to purchase special items for the school.
Students apply for sales and managerial positions. The School
Store needs parent volunteers.

Student Council
Student Council members serve as leaders in the school for a semester.
Their responsibilities include being a role model, representing
their classmates in making decisions for the student body, and
assuming job responsibilities for making the school a better place.
Students assume responsibility for current issues and they learn
how to talk to each other to seek solutions. Class representatives
are elected using a democratic process.

Student Leaders
Student Leaders provides an opportunity for students in all grades
to meet with the principal to learn about leadership roles in
our school. Each group of student leaders identifies issues and
projects of interest. Participating students begin to form an
understanding of responsibility and decision making.

Student SAPP Team - SHout (Students
Helping out)
The Student SAPP (Substance Abuse Prevention Project) Team focuses
on helping and giving back to the school community. Fourth grade
students may apply to attend a training retreat in the fall. Students
are charged with completing a project that will have a positive
impact on the school climate.
Study Hall
Study Hall is offered during the school day to provide time for
relearning, reteaching and questions. Students receive reinforcement
on new skills and support in completing assignments. Students
may attend with teacher permission. Homework help may be offered before school one
morning per week.

and After School Activities
Intramural Sports
Intramural sports activities are available to students in grade
3-5 twice each week before school. These activities give students
additional opportunities to further develop motor skills, positive
self-image, sportsmanship, and to participate in competitive game
sports.

Jump Rope Club
Boys and girls are invited to the gym before school to participate
in Jump Rope Club. Any student from kindergarten through fifth
grade is welcome. Beginners, as well as those more experienced,
are invited to come skip rope together.

Special
Projects and Competitions
Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination provides an opportunity for students who
are committed to creative interpretation and problem solving.
Students who elect to participate are given a selection of complex
problems to solve using teamwork. The problems share a common
theme. Each team also participates in spontaneous problem solving.
Teams have an opportunity to perform at a district tournament
in spring. Each team needs a sponsor. Contact: Parent Team Leaders

Geography Bee
The National Geographic Geography Bee provides an opportunity
for students to compete to demonstrate their knowledge about geography
at the school, district, and state level. Contact: Maria Dresselhaus
Science Fair
All Coal Creek students, K-5, have the opportunity to participate
in the Coal Creek Science Fair where they present their research
or project. Students begin formulating their question/research
early in the year. The fair is scheduled for April, 2005. Contact:

Spelling Bee
The Spelling Bee provides an opportunity for students to compete
to demonstrate spelling ability at the school, district and state

Talent Show
Student Council sponsors tryouts for the Annual Talent Show. Students
are selected by their peers to perform in this all-school show.
Students selected demonstrate significant creativity or ability
in the performing arts.
