Welcome to Coal Creek Elementary School!

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” Plutarch

Dear Families and Visitors,

Welcome to our school! Coal Creek Elementary proudly serves our community through the efforts of an excellent, collaborate faculty and staff, supportive and energetic parents, an innovative learning community, and students who are empowered to serve in responsible leadership roles. We continue our tradition of strong academic achievement in content areas and the arts. We were honored to be named one of Colorado’s Schools of Excellence in our recent past.

Our academic improvement goals for the 2003-2004 school year will focus on the areas of math and literacy development. Coal Creek is well known for our Balanced Literacy Program, offering small, guided reading, flexible groupings based on changing student needs. Our teachers focus on application of reading and writing skills and strategies in all content areas. Other academic highlights include a math block which allows for extension and acceleration; Latin is offered to upper grade students as one of many choices for Gifted/Talented programming opportunities. The strength of our music, art, and P.E. programs define who we are as a school. Our library is the hub of learning at Coal Creek, teaching students how to access all potential sources of information as they build their critical thinking skills. We also provide a technology strand that runs throughout the school curriculum.

A priority goal for Coal Creek School focuses on promoting understanding of diversity. Projects this year will recognize the inclusion of all students, standing up for others, and using good words versus bullying words in solving problems. We encourage community service projects and activities where students may demonstrate peer leadership. Coal Creek invites the community, families, and classrooms to The Evening of Sharing to become acquainted with organizations and ideas for service in our community. This event also broadens our understanding of the diversity in the world around us.

Please join us as we celebrate each child’s growth! We have an outstanding faculty and staff and welcome our parents as true partners in the learning process.

Warm Regards,

John Kiemele, M.Ed., Principal
