Where In The World . . .#2 The Polar Express!

 

For Questions 1-5, circle the answer for the correct pole.  Also fill in blanks for 3 and 4.

1. Which pole is closest to Colorado?   North Pole      

2. If you wanted to watch penguins marching in person, to which pole would you travel?    South Pole

Note:  Dramatic loss of ozone in the lower stratosphere over Antarctica was first noticed in the 1970s by a research group from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) who were monitoring the atmosphere above Antarctica from a research station.

7. Which of the United States is closest to the South Pole?  Hawaii

8. What is the latitude and longitude of the North Pole?   Latitude 90 degrees N,  Longitude - some sources show 0 degress Longitude, but others show not Longitude defined since all the lines of longitude come together (converge) at the poles.

9. The North Pole of the earth is not in the same location as the magnetic north pole, to which the north ends of a compass needle point.  Which country is closest to the magnetic north pole?    Canada. 

Note:  Located hundred of miles south of the geographic North Pole lies the magnetic North Pole at approximately 82.7° North and 114.4° West (2005), northwest of Canada's Sverdrup Island. However, this location is not fixed and is moving continually, even on a daily basis.

10.  The Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis (which is Latin for "northern dawn") is a display of lights of various colors and shapes seen in the night sky at certain times of the year in parts of the Northern Hemisphere close to the North Pole.  What is the name of similar night sky lights near the South Pole? 

Aurora Australis ("southern dawn")

Note:  One of several local Maori words to describe the visual spectacle that is the "Southern Lights" is Tahu-nui-a-Rangi (translates, "Great Glowing of the Sky").
