The native language of Ireland is called Irish Gaelic. Here are four Irish Gaelic words and their English meanings:

abhainn = river, cathair = city, sliabh = mountain, lough = lake

5.  The longest abhainn in Ireland is the    Shannon     which enters the sea between counties Clare and Limerick after a journey of 240 miles.

6.  The highest sliabh is          Carrantuohill         (3414 ft. above sea level), near Killarney in County Kerry.

7.  The largest lough (153 square miles) is Lough           Neagh             in the North.

8.  The capital and largest cathair in the Irish Republic is           Dublin                 , which has about 860,000 people.

9.  The                Irish                Sea, which separates Ireland from Britain, is from 11 to 120 miles wide.
