| If you were flying with an American barn owl when it was hunting,
you would be amazed! But you would be up late between 9:00 pm and 2:00 am.
Oh no! |
I got my information from BIRDS OF PREY by Michael Cuisin. |
Barn owls live in United States, South Africa, Europe, South Asia and Australia. They need open grass land but also live in banks of rivers. Barn owls eat rats, rabbits, sparrows and insects. A barn owl can catch 16 mice, 3 gophers,1 rat and 1 squirrel in 20 minutes. Barn owls hunt alone and not with its friends. Do you know what talons are? They are the claws that they catch their prey with. A barn owl is prey to the great horned owl and prairie falcon. The female barn owl is nicknamed white lady and the male is nicknamed monkey owl. |
I got my information from BIRDS OF PREY by John Pemberton and BIRDS OF PREY by Michael Cuisin. |
If you see a bird that moves swiftly though the air and has a face shaped like a heart and if it lives around a farm, then it is possible that it is a barn owl. One of their behaviors is that they hunt alone. It is not common to see a whole family together. The barn owl usually only lays 4-7 eggs and it only mates once. When the chicks are 28 days old they become fuzzy, but they still don't look like full grown barn owls yet. When the female is pregnant only the male owl hunts. When they hunt they stay very still until they spy the prey. The barn owl usually eats bugs or mice.To better hear their prey one ear is up and one ear is down. It is hard to find prey in the winter because of all the snow. When the barn owl sees its prey it swoops down to pick it up. Barn owls don't make a "hoot" sound like other owls do. They make a hoarse noise. I got my information from the book called BARN OWLS by Wolfgang Epple. |
