Colorado Chipmunk by Amanda, age 9
If you see a little animal that has stripes on it's face and side it might be a chipmunk. If you hear a chirping sound, it might be a chipmunk that's worried. Chipmunks dig tunnels under rocks or bushes. Did you know that they are eight to nine inches long and three to five ounces? They eat seeds, chinquapins, berries, green plants, beechnuts, hazelnuts and insects. The chipmunk is smaller than the squirrel. When polar bears are babbies they are the same size as chipmunks. Chipmunks take dust baths rolling in the dirt. They fluff up their fur. They're the smallest of ground type squirrel. Their habitat is rocky or brushy areas below 8,000 feet and high hillside holes stumps and trees. It's enemy is the weasel. They carry their food in pouches.

If you see a mouse with white stripes, tan fur and sharp claws it's probably a chipmunk. Chipmunks run very fast. Getting away from some animals is easy. For example why it's easy to get away from a vole is because chimunks can outrun a vole just by jogging. Chipmunks run like other four-legged animals till the enemy is a foot away then it starts doing far jumps close to the ground. The chipmunks predators are weasels, birds, bears, and hawks. Chipmunks eat berries, baby snakes, nuts, and grasshoppers. Chipmunks stalk very quietly then when they are a foot away they jump after their prey. Chipmunk burrows are like underground houses because they have a special place and rooms for older chipmunks.

Colorado Chipmunk by Kyle E., age 8

If you see a rodent with a tail that's up, it's probably a chipmunk. If it has two white stripes above and below each eye, and a dark stripe through its eye, don't eat lunch yet because it's a Colorado chipmunk! These rodents have black, brown, and white fur and white stripes all over their back. Their enemies are pumas. As much as I studied, the adults can run really fast. The babies, which are called pups, squeak for help. The chipmunk is 3 inches long. I am clueless how tall they are. Have you ever been eating lunch in the Rocky Mountains? Well, maybe a chipmunk ate your chips, because they live in all the parks in the west. Their homes are called burrows. Did you think they lived in trees to get nuts better? Well, they don't even eat nuts. They eat seeds, berries and green plants. Well, I've told a lot. I hope you had fun, bye!!!
