and I got my information from Nature's Children, PRONGHORN by Elma Schemenaur. |
If you see a animal on the hot plains that looks like a deer, it might be a pronghorn. Does it have straight horns? If so, it is a pronghorn. The pronghorn can weigh from 84 to 110 pounds. They are about 4 feet long and 31/2 feet tall. The pronghorn can run up to 84 miles an hour. It is the fastest mammal in North America. In the year 1918 there were only about a 1,000 pronghorn, but in1998 there are about 60,000 pronghorn. Their enemies are cougars, coyotes and a whole lot of other animals. They travel in big and little herds. Most people called the pronghorn the antelope. Antelope is its nickname. They are not related to antelope. The pronghorn is NOT related to the deer family either. They live in the northwestern Rocky Mountains and on the plains of eastern Colorado. I got information from THE PRONGHORN by Mark E. Ahlstrom. |
