Red-tailed Hawk by Stephanie, age 8

Zoom! Down goes a bird, straight to the ground. It almost hits. Then the bird flies straight up. It's cutting the air as it flies. It's holding a snake. The red-tailed hawk's meal is snakes and birds. The sharp talons and beak help the bird to rip its prey in flight.

The red-tailed hawk has a reddish, orange color on the tip of the tail. If the sun is shining through it's tail it looks slightly pink.

The female lays 3 to 5 eggs. When the hawk lays her eggs, the shell may be weaker because of DDT. The eggs can crack. DDT is a chemical. It is used to keep bugs from eating the plants.

I got my information from THE WONDER OF HAWKS by Rita Ritchin and Summer Matteson andTHE WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA.

The Red-tailed Hawk by Zoe, age 8

A big creature swoops down when it sees a rodent that has a string dragging behind it. It can see in color from 500 feet above the ground when it's circling a little animal. As it swoops down its wings cut the clouds apart and it catchs the prey with its sharp and ferocious talons. This is the red-tailed hawk. Red-tailed hawks eat black-footed ferrets, mice, frogs, and other small rodents. They are meat eaters as you can see. They love meat because they're hawks.

Now I will talk to you about where they live. They live in the open country. The Red-tailed hawk's scientific name is Buteo Jamaicensis. Red-tailed hawks have three toes, their tail color is russet red, and the red-tailed hawk is the largest hawk in the world. Wow!

I got my Information from WILD FAMILY by Joanne M. Johnson and Jim Kahnwiler and THE WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA.

Red-tailed Hawk by Landon, age 10

If you see a bird that is eating a rattlesnake or mice, squirrel, rabbit or insect, it might be a red-tailed hawk. The habitat of the red-tailed hawk is open country, scrub woodlands, and wide rocky canyons. They can be found almost anywhere in Colorado. Their nests are made out of cactus, yucca and other plants, sticks and branches. They make their nests in trees in cliffs. The hawk sleeps on one leg with its head tucked under its feathers and the other leg tucked into its body. The nickname of the red-tailed hawk is chicken hawk. The color of the tail of the red-tailed hawk is dark brown and black. The hawk lays 2-3 eggs. Hawks are sensitive to loss of habitat and to pollution. The red-tailed hawk's voice sounds like this: skeeeeeer. At close range it sounds high-pitched like: guh-rank. I hope you got all the information you wanted about the red-tailed hawk.
