The Red Squirrel by Ayla, age 9

Have you ever heard a chick, chick or chatter? It is probably a red squirrel or chickaree. The chickaree or red squirrel is the smallest tree squirrel. It weighs half a pound and it is a foot long. They are also the noisiest tree squirrel! It will scold at you and stomp its feet and flick its tail and then you know its a red squirrel.

Red squirrels collect food in the winter. The red squirrel will mainly eat seeds, nuts, bird eggs and mushrooms. Their enemies are raptors, foxes, martens and lynx. Grizzly bears are not their enemies. The babies are born in late April or March. They open their eyes 27-35 days after they are born. The red squirrels live in the Rocky Mountains, Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks. So remember, if you want to see a red squirrel go to one of our national parks in the western United States and you might just see one.

Red Squirrel by Elena, age 9

One day I was walking in a conifer forest and I heard a high pitched "TCHK TCHK TCHK" and a little chatter. At first I thought it was a bird, but then I saw a huge pile of pine cone scales lying under a big tree. Then I knew it was a red squirrel. The red squirrel's official name is the Tamiasciurus Hudsonicus. You can find the red squirrel in deciduous and conifer forests. The red squirrel eats a lot of food. They eat pine cones, acorns, nuts, buds, fruit, seeds, sap, berries, fungi, bark, bird's eggs, nestlings, small mammals and even gray squirrels. Finally, I stop looking at the pile of pine cone scales under the tree. When I look up and see a little squirrel. It makes a noise at me, a little "TCHK TCHK TCHK" It's a red squirrel. All of a sudden a lynx comes along and then a fox, then a marten. " RUN, RED SQUIRREL, RUN!".

I found my information in SQUIRRELS, A WILDLIFE HANDBOOK by Kim Long.

Red Squirrel by Jennifer L., age 9

If you hear a squealing animal in a tree, it could be a red squirrel. Does it run up trees very well? Can you see a fuzzy tail? If so, then it is a red squirrel. The red squirrel is one of the loudest tree squirrels. The red squirrel eats berries, nuts, and seeds. Squirrels' eyes are high on their heads so they can see in almost any direction. Squirrels live on all continents of the world except Australia and Antarctica. The squirrels are often seen in most parks, woodlands areas, and in the mountains of Colorado. Most squirrels mate in early spring after much fighting and chasing. They weigh half a pound and they are a foot long. One of the squirrel's predators is a badger. Baby squirrels are playful and pester the adults. Squirrels' tails can be blankets and help the animals balance when running and jumping. I hope you enjoyed reading about the red squirrel.
