Unique team teaching partnership spanning 12 years with 50 years of combined experience! Students experience different teachers throughout the day as they will in middle school.
In math, instruction is differentiated by flexible skill-based groupings. An emphasis on problem solving and practical application of concepts is a focus in our instruction.
For literacy, discussion book groups are determined by student interest as well as reading levels. Celebrated at the end of the year is a Read Olympic ceremony recognizing students' independent reading successes.
Our social studies curriculum comes alive with a mock "Ellis Island" simulation enhancing the study of immigration and lively debates prioritizing the Bill of Rights. Complimenting our study of geography is our involvement with the Peace Corps program, World Wise Schools.
Students enjoy hands-on science labs throughout the year. In tandem with an active, constructivist approach to science, students are responsible for written lab write-ups, as well as a variety of assessments.
Emphasis throughout the year is on organizational skills and students accepting responsibility for their own learning. Comments from former students, parents, and middle school teachers indicate that Flatirons fifth graders stand out in their preparation for middle school.
We pride ourselves in the weekly communication between home and school. Written Progress Reports and daily planners help our students take charge of their learning.
Fifth graders take a leadership role in Flatirons' "NO BULLYING" program and continue to implement the peer refusal skills emphasized by Flatirons K-5.
We're fortunate to have an abundance of enthusiastic parent/adult volunteers supporting our students' learning.
4 days and 3 nights at Highlands Presbyterian Camp for our Outdoor School experience to finish the school year!! Summit hikes, orienteering, field studies, rock climbing, individual and group challenges make this an adventure of a lifetime!
The 5 th Grade Community Service Club is organized by parents and allows students to have actual experiences supporting their own community. Opportunities vary from year to year depending on student interests. Examples include: Homeless Shelter, Community Food Share, EFAA, nursing homes, Meals on Wheels, and gardening at our own school.
