The first grade curriculum integrates the developmental needs of the whole child.

In every content area, we emphasise process rather than learning isolated facts and skills.  As teachers, we strive to produce thinkers and learners who have the tools for gathering, processing, (i.e. problem solving and decision making), and communicating information.

Our literacy program comprises five major areas: observing, listening, speaking, writing and reading.  We expect children to progress along a continuum of skills at their own developmental rate.  In addition to our daily block of literacy instruction, literacy is integrated throughout the day in all subject areas.

Math instruction is active, exploratory and hands-on with a constructivist approach.  The children engage in meaningful experiences to gain conceptual knowledge.

Science is an ongoing investigation of our natural world through the use of FOSS (Full Option Science System) modules.  Science activities are also generated by first grader's curiosity about the world around them.  Specific FOSS units include Pebbles, Sand and Silt, Balance and Motion, and New Plants.

Our Social Studies themes are integrated throughout the year in many units that we study.  This includes families here and around the world, maps and globes, community service, and textiles around the world.

Our first grade classes benefit from enthusiastic parent/adult volunteers from our community.
