Third Grade
We have an innovative high-energy teaching team. We combine rigorous academics with a rich variety of experiential education. Our third graders will participate in enriching field trips, a Native American Craft Fair, a celebration of Impressionist Art Study culminating in a "Monet's Picnic," and frequent hands-on science lessons.
Our math groups are designed to present appropriate challenges for each child. Our third grade math curriculum emphasizes creative problem solving and application of concepts.
We teach reading through book club discussions. Your child will learn specific literacy skills such as passage analysis, character development, and comprehension strategies.
We believe the development of writing skills is very important, and we teach writing skills every day. Students will experience a variety of writing forms including poetry, narrative, report, exposition, recount, explanation, and procedure.
We teach science from the FOSS (Full Option Science System) modules. This hands-on, exploratory-based curriculum includes units on the human body, measurement, rocks and minerals and sound.
Our social studies curriculum focuses on Colorado history. We begin with the Basketmakers and Folsom People and continue through the Gold Rush and on to Boulder history.
During the year, students will participate in at least one social service activity. Some of the activities have included: EFAA food drive, Coats for Kids, and Share a Gift.
During the last 30 minutes of most Fridays, students can choose among a variety of activities including reading, creative writing, painting or playing educational games.
We encourage volunteers in our classrooms. We have both parent volunteers and CU students from the Adopt a School program.
Through our rich and challenging third grade curriculum we encourage collaborative work among students as well as emphasizing personal responsibility and achievement of individual goals.
