Health and Illness

YOUR CHILD'S HEALTH

Please send only healthy children to school.   the following conditions require that your child should not be sent to school, and if one develops while your child is at school, s/he will be sent home.

Please notify the school if your child has been diagnosed with any contagious condition.

HEALTH ROOM

Flatirons health room is staffed two hours a day by a para-educator.  We have parent volunteers trained in first aid who assist at other times.  If the health room para or volunteers are unavailable, the office staff assists the child.

When a child is not feeling well at school the health room staff will determine the extent of injury or illness and decide if the parent should be called.  Except in cases involving emergency medical procedures, the primary responsibility for transporting injured or ill students will be with the student's parents or those  individuals listed on the Student Information and Emergency Card.  When a parent is called to pick up a child due to illness, it expected that this will be done as soon as possible.  We will expect students to go home if they are unable to return to the classroom, have a fever, or have an injury or illness requiring parent/doctor intervention. All communicable diseases should be reported to the school as soon as diagnosed.

PHYSICALS

B.V.S.D. Board Policy strongly recommends that all students entering kindergarten, 4th, 7th, and 10th grade, and all those new to the district receive a physical examination.  Your physician has a form for the examination in his/her office.  Please return the form on the first day of school or as soon as possible.  Parents of kindergarten students will also have to fill out a current health survey.  For any student with a significant health condition parents are requested to submit an update each school year.

IMMUNIZATIONS

All students entering B.V.S.D. schools must show proof of immunization upon registration.  The required forms are available at area doctor's offices, the Boulder County Health Department or can be picked up at the school.

HEPATITIS B AND VARICELLA (CHICKENPOX) VACCINATIONS

Completion of the Hepatitis B Vaccine Series of three immunizations is required for students entering all grades. Varicella vaccination is mandatory for students entering kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 2003.  An extra grade will be added each year until it is mandatory for all grades.  See the yearly information packet for details.

VISION AND HEARING TESTS

Screening is done annually for grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5 under the supervision of the school nurse.  They are performed in September.  New students and special referrals are screened throughout the year.  Parents may request these services by calling the school.

EMERGENCY CARDS

It is extremely important that the Emergency Cards be returned to school on the first day.  Please complete the entire card, including the Significant Health Section on the bottom of the card.  It is mandatory that we have two emergency contacts.  Be sure to notify the office with any changes in emergency information and phone numbers: both home and work.  If your child is ill, he or she may only be released to those listed on the Emergency Card.  If you will be out of town, please inform us in writing who will be caring for your child.
