MY FAMILY
I am originally from Farmingdale , New York . I have been living in Boulder County for 27 years with my wife and two boys. One of my sons is now in his third year of teaching at Eisenhower Elementary in Boulder and my other son is working toward his molecular biology degree at CU Boulder. My wife is a registered nurse working as a case manager at a local hospital.
MY BACKGROUND
I graduated from CU Boulder with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and then I received my teaching certificate from the School of Education at CU. I have taught from first through fifth grades at Mesa Elementary and Horizons K-8 Alternative School in Boulder . I pursued my Master’s Degree at UCD in Administration, Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) while working as the assistant lead teacher at Horizon Elementary School . This is my ninth year as principal at Heatherwood.
MY GOALS
I started as principal of Heatherwood during the 1999-2000 school year.
My goal for Heatherwood is that each and every student looks forward to coming to school. I hope that I can create a learning environment where all children feel welcome and challenged to do their personal best.
I think creating a community of learners while differentiating instruction for all students allows students to be challenged and be successful. In reflecting on our entire school community, CSAP isn’t needed to show me that we have an excellent school. From students, teachers, parents, paraeducators, community volunteers and support staff to Intramurals, Hot Shots Choir, Mathletes, Heatherwood After-School University we have created a wonderful learning community for our students.
My goal is to know each and every student by their name. I value each and every student for who they are and when I can connect personally with them they know that I care about how they are doing. This connection also allows me to give the students words of encouragement when they may not be having such a good day or they also give me a boost when I most need it. It works both ways.
MY PERSPECTIVE
I face all challenges as learning opportunities. I know that I will either learn more about myself as a leader and person or I will learn more about another person’s perspective. Challenges require creative problem-solving while understanding the needs of the person or situation.
