Heatherwood PTO Meeting April 4, 2008
Meeting Minutes
PTO President Brenda Slade opened the meeting.
Principal Update (Larry Orobona)
- Teaching positions for 2008-09 school year – will hire 2 nd grade, 5 th grade classroom teachers & P.E. teacher. Positions posted @ end of April. Interviewing after that. Can fill positions up until start of school in August.
- Staff – reviewing Intervention Blocks & discussing TAG. Requested PTO give more advance notice & explain where funds from HIM are used. Why still having fees – like t-shirts & bus fares, etc.
- District – has on on-line survey for parents regarding the budget. Had problems with it & will be reposting it. Renee will send out email when it’s ready.
- Thanks to PTO & parents for all the support.
Financial Update (Terri Kampe)
- See handout for specific details
- Grocery certificates going very well budget $4500 now @ $6000
- HIM $43,340 + $3,190 (matching) – did very well. 70% participation.
- Some items waiting to be paid – like yearbooks & some expenses for Bingo & Art room purchases.
- Ebooks for next year in question. Sell as a service? Needs chairperson.
- Budget for next year will be ready by next meeting for approval. Send budget items to Terri this week.
SIT Update (Carla Zachiemier)
- Project with Dr. Jeffery Luftig from CU moving along. Currently gathering data from CSAP & other sources to analyze & provide some specific steps for Hwood to implement for students who may struggle in the future. Intervention in early stages – based on statistical probability.
- Looking into Deming Award – previous awards have gone to districts – but maybe Hwood could apply.
Teacher Update (Jolie Evans)
- Thanks for ice cream for teacher raffle parties!
- Teachers supportive of Schoolfunder.com. Understand we are a pilot school; smart board is the item we’re testing out.
- Learning Fair next Wed. – Ice Cream Social (6 – 6:30), then Learning Fair. Wide variety of projects – lots of participation. Boulder Ice Cream donated all – thank you!
Other Updates
- Assessment Days – August 14 & 15 (all day Thurs & ½ day Friday). School starts on Tuesday, August 19 th. PTO 1 stop shopping will be happening again – looking for volunteers, childcare will be provided. Need to focus efforts on Kinder families & new families.
- Walk & Roll Week – April 21 – 24. Activities planned. See big map of school for where parking & drop off will be. Need volunteers for 30 – 45 minutes each morning – sign ups @ Learning Fair. New bike racks are part of the grant award – hopefully in by fall. Incentives to participate include prizes for most class participation. Child drop off will be moved to bus area ONLY.
- Heather Heatherwood – permit approved. Notices distributed in neighborhood. Still need volunteers – permits require a specific # of volunteers. Got sponsors $750. Next meeting April 16 th 9:30 am @ Page 2.
- PEN Speaker with Douglass – Speaker they wanted was too expensive. Found another speaker on similar topic for right price. Date TBD – will be @ Douglass in the evening for parents, no childcare.
- Spring Cleaning – May 2 &4 th (9-4 on Friday, 8-5 on Sunday). Working on wish lists with teachers & parents. Gardens in front need cleaning up.
- Reading Garden (Deb S.) – Lowes contact info needed. Has detailed plans from Landplans, Inc $4600 does not include irrigation. Brick wall being huge problem – district needs to fix & not getting it done. Suggest making it cement. 2 benches from last years 5 th grade class & one for Mrs. Richey need to be included. Voted to sign Landplans contract.
- Web Site Update (Deb) – Working with district & teachers. Directory will be on website next year. Looking at custom software for directory for next year – date input & directory production. Volunteer Builder didn’t work well for our needs.
- Social Events Survey – will go out to parents & students with next HH. On line, & results will help make social event calendar for next year.
- Pennies for Peace - $400 before spring break – goal was $500. Learning Fair & Walk & Roll week will offer more penny donating time. Program over May 2 nd.
Other Business
- Impact on Education fundraiser – need to donate basket. Use Lasik certificate.
- Rush Smoothie Day – May 5 th
- Shepard of the Hills offered a 5 th Grade graduation event – needs follow up.
- Tri-fold boards sold out – need more next year.
- Hwood Cookbook @ printer will be available at spring book fair (same week as Walk n Roll week) $10 per book. Thanks to Stephanie Cohn!
- Impact dinner April 17 th – will we get a DVD of night?
