Heatherwood Talented and Gifted Identification

How does a student get referred to the TAG program?  The teachers have the Kilgore Observation Inventory to assist them in refering students.  Parents may also refer their child.  A general guideline to consider is: if your child is able to perform schoolwork two grades above his or her age, your child may be gifted.  During the first three weeks of the new school year, teachers give required assessments on each child.  These student assessments are considered when identifying a student for the TAG program.

Once a student is nominated for TAG testing, the parents, the current teacher, and the former teacher are given a Student Inventory form to complete.  Once the Inventories are returned with parental consent, we administer the Raven or Nagleria test and the Cognitive Abilities Tests (CogAT).  The CogAT is a series of Non-Verbal, Quantitative and Verbal tests.  We also look at the student's CSAP, QRI, Star, Writing Matrix, and other assesments.  After testing, the results are discussed in the TAG Identification Committee meeting.  Once a student is identified, there is a meeting with the parents, child, and teacher to document goals for his/her Personal Learning Plan.  A copy is given to the parents, teacher and the TAG office.  If the student is not TAG qualified, a letter is sent to the parents.  Most TAG activities also enrich the high-ability students as well.
