High Peaks Programs

Talented and Gifted

The Talented and Gifted (TAG) program at High Peaks is designed to meet the needs of some children for learning at an accelerated rate or in greater depth. To meet the needs of all students at High Peaks, teachers with the help of the TAG Advisor employ various teaching methods including the following:

» Differentiated curriculum and instruction
» Cluster grouping
» Acceleration by grade level or subject
» Curriculum compacting or telescoping
» Independent studies
» Pull out for specific classes
» Attendance at the next level of schooling for certain classes

In addition to these, various Enrichment opportunities are available to students before, during and after school.

English as a Second Language

High Peaks Elementary offers quality language support to our English language learners through individualized instruction based on the students’ needs.  The program seeks to affirm students’ cultural background and experiences, embrace the native language, and facilitate language acquisition.  Language learners may receive supplementary English instruction targeting oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in a small group.  Additionally, the ESL teacher works collaboratively with the classroom teachers to ensure enriching classroom instruction.  The program also provides classroom teachers with resources to use in their classrooms such as: realia, visual aids, book sets, and teacher resource books.  All ESL instruction is articulated with the Core Knowledge curriculum so that the students may succeed academically in the classroom. Several of our teachers have been working towards certification in teaching culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

Special Education

High Peaks offers special education services to students determined to have needs through an eligibility process. We serve children through an inclusion model, where children get help in their regular classroom as much as possible, but also may participate in small pull-out groups. We also use paraprofessionals if needed to support children throughout the day.

Please visit the BVSD web site for more information on Special Education.

K-CARE

K-CARE is an optional half-day, fee-based childcare program offering an extended day experience for kindergarteners. K-CARE is available at High Peaks for kindergartners needing care for the rest of the school day. K-CARE compliments the school programs and includes a balance of activities as well as structured and unstructured projects. Children experience literature, dramatic play, the visual arts, music, large and small motor games and the support to practice social skills. Qualified staff provide a child-centered early childhood program with a 1-to-15 teacher/child ratio.

Please visit the BVSD web site for more information on the K-CARE program.
