High Peaks Awarded National Blue Ribbon
High Peaks has been choosen as a National Blue Ribbon School. The award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either academically superior, or have made dramatic gains in student achievement and helped close gaps in achievement among minority and disadvantaged students. Our efforts are a combination of a terrific staff, great students, and committed parents! Thanks to each and every one of you for what you do for High Peaks! Cheryl McCarthy and Rosemary Lonhdorf went to Washington earlier this month to receive this award on behalf of High Peaks.

Challenge Committee
To make Challenge successful we need parent volunteers. Challenge is for all High Peaks students who want a fun, exciting, stimulating new activity such as Science Fair, Math Olympiad, Chess Club/Chess League, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, High Peaks Post, Stock Market Game, Destination Imagination, Lego League, and the Evening Speaker Program. Please contact Amy Funke, or for Destination Imagniation Jane Woods.
School Food Project
The School Food Project's vision is for all children of Boulder Valley School District to have daily access to fresh, flavorful and nutritious food made with wholesome and when possible, local ingredients, so that every child may thrive.
Support the School Food Project at all Boulder area Whole Foods Market locations where all bag donations support the School Food Project through the end of the year. Through September 30th there are $1 and $5 coupons at the registers you can add on to your groceries and help us ensure that all children have access to healthy and fresh food at school.
Landscaping Committee
The committee for landscaping the school (including playgrounds and gardens) will be meeting on a regular basis during this school year. This is committee involves High Peaks and BCSIS. The parent rep from High Peaks is Amy Castro. She would love to hear any questions, suggestions or concerns.
Chess
CHESS CLUB - During 2009, Chess Club will meet on Tuesdays from 10/20-12/15 from 3pm-4pm in the school library. Children who already know how to play chess - at any level - are welcome to come to chess club on a drop-in basis whenever they like at no cost. At chess club, children play casual games for fun and practice. Chess Club meeting dates in 2010 will be determined by demand and library availability.
OPTIONAL CHESS LESSONS for both beginner players and intermediate/advanced players will be provided once again by Boulder County Chess School on Tuesdays during Chess Club. Lessons for each group will run alternately for 8 weeks from 10/20 - 12/8 . We are fortunate to have The HP Challenge Committee contribute 15% of the cost. Parents will only be charged $8.50 for each 1 hour lesson - a total of $34.00 for 4 lessons. Both chess club and chess lessons will take place in the library. Lessons will be conducted on one side, general playing on the other. Beginner lessons will be provided on 10/20, 11/3, 11/17 and 12/1 and Intermediate/Advanced lessons on 10/27, 11/10, 11/24, and 12/8. Children enrolled in lessons will get the benefit of having a full hour of instruction one week followed by a full hour of free play the following week. This year's chess club will be run by 4th grade parents, Laurie Schacht and Naomi Heiser, please contact them for sign up information.
CHESS LEAGUE –There is an opportunity to play in the Boulder Valley Chess League, an inter-school competitive series. If we have enough signups for this, HP will form a team. There are about 5 games from Nov-Mar. Matches take place at HP or at local schools, and run on Thursdays from 3:30-5 or 5:30 (approx 1 match per month). We have typically carpooled for the away matches. HP has won this event for the past 3 years. If you are interested, please contact Scott Swerdlin for more information.
