Official Start of the Season
Make sure you are registered for XC!
The official start of the Cross Country season begins during the first week of school.
Practices during the first week are mandatory and are held at 7:30am until classes start
then they are held at 3:15pm for the rest of the season. Also, please read through the
XC guidelines list below, so that you are familiar with our expectations.
The Spirit Pack
order form for the upcoming XC season is on the web site. There are no items
on the order form that are mandatory, your athlete will be provided with a uniform and
warm-up to be worn at races only. By the way, anything worn under the uniform needs to be
solid black with no visible writing per CHSAA rules. Both the compression shirts and
tights meet those requirements. All orders need to be turned in by the Coyote Chase, so we
have a better chance of getting everything back to the kids before the Pat Patten race.
Coach

As you are registering for Cross Country, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Cross Country
team policies. If
you have any questions, please send a note to coach at
MoHiXcCoach.
We as coaches encourage a positive atmosphere among our team members and hope that parents support their athletes
and other team members in the same positive manner. We have put together the following guidelines for the Monarch
Cross Country Team. With the number of athletes who participate in Cross Country, we recognize that there are
different motivating factors for athletes' participation. With this in mind we have decided to accommodate both
the serious runners and the semi-serious social runners on our team by creating two teams within the framework
of the entire team. This allows coaches to streamline our workouts for both groups of runners. We feel that this
will provide a better team-centered approach to both our workouts and races. All athletes are allowed to
participate in each meet, with the exception of the state meet, as long as they have followed the guidelines
set forth.
All participants are required to follow CHSAA Sportsmanship Protocol at all meets and during all practices. Use of
foul language, threats against team members or competitors, and unsportsmanlike conduct are all prohibited on the
Monarch CC team. Team members are expected to be courteous to coaches, parents and other team members at all times.
Because we do many of our workouts on trails throughout the county, it is also required that team members are courteous
to other persons using the trails (don't block trails or run in packs that block trails).
Letter Eligible
Gold Team Requirements:
To be a member of the Gold Team a participant is required to dedicate themselves to the sport, not only for their
own benefit but also for the benefit of their teammates. To run Varsity, it is required that a participant be a
member of the Gold Team, but being a member of the Gold Team does not ensure participation on Varsity, though it
does require the commitment to yourself and the team. Gold Team members will be given individual target times
for all up-tempo workouts. Gold Team members are expected to be at all practices, including Saturdays! A Gold
Team member may have 3 unexcused practices during the season and will lose their place on the Gold Team for the
remainder of the season once the 3 unexcused absences have been exceeded. A Gold Team member may not miss more
than 1 practice during the week (excused or unexcused) to participate in that week's meet. Injured members are
still required to come to practice to assist coaches as needed.
Varsity Selection:
Varsity athletes are selected from the previous race top 7 finishers as long as all athletes have met the Gold
Team requirements. Regional and State participants will be selected by the coaches taking in to account the entire
season's performances.
Run for Fun
Black Team Requirements:
To be a member of the Black Team a participant must have the willingness to participate with the team, but may have
more flexibility with regard to practice. Participants are required to be at practices, but may have up to 8
unexcused practices before being removed from the team. A Black Team member may not run on Varsity unless they
have met the requirements of the Gold Team for the entire season. Black team members will run the same or similar
workouts as Gold Team members, with general target times for up-tempo workouts. A Black Team member may not miss more
that 2 practices during the week (excused or unexcused) to participate in that week's meet.
Absences
The following are examples of excused absences:
- Doctors appointment for physical injury or sickness (Doctors note required).
- Family Emergency.
- School Tests (SAT/ACT) or make up test from a school class (Note is required from the teacher).
- Senior School visits (limited to missing 3 practices during the season for visits after which they are unexcused). Please try and schedule school visits before or after the season.
The following are examples of
unexcused absences:
- Practice/Games for other sports.
- Family Vacation, camping, mountain climbing (you get the picture).
- Babysitting.
- Chess Club or other school clubs.
- Dental appt. (please schedule these at times that do not conflict with practice unless it is an emergency).
Camp
Every summer, the Monarch High School holds a high altitude training camp in
Leadville, CO. For information about this year's camp, see our

Pasta Dinner
Mary Commander is organizing our weekly pasta dinners this year. Below is her
kick-off email notice with the details about these fun events:
Welcome new families and runners and welcome back veteran families and runners!
The Cross Country team has enjoyed the tradition of having a potluck pasta
dinner the night before each race. Typically many runners attend as it is
great team building experience and it helps with the carbo loading prior to
race day. It is an optional activity, depending on school work and other
obligations. Parents and siblings are invited to attend also, as it is a good
way to get to know other families. Typically we get 15 - 20 parents at any
pasta dinner.
Dinner starts at 6:30 and everyone is on their way by 8:00 PM (it is usually a
school night.) I will send an email out once a week to let you know what your
runner is assigned to bring, who is hosting and directions to their home.
For each dinner, runners are assigned a dish to bring, which should serve 8.
We serve fruit and salads, pasta/pizza, breads, and desserts. The team
supplies the forks, spoons, napkins, plates, etc. for the pasta dinners. Please
bring what you are assigned. A category added a couple of years ago, which
worked quite well, was healthy team snacks for the following day's race.
It is now time to organize the hosts for the dinners. Traditionally, seniors get
first choice to host a dinner at their home. If you would like to host a dinner
please let me know the date which works best for your family. Feel free to
email or call me if you have any questions.

Coyote Chase
Coyote Chase, 8:00 a.m. on August 29, 2009, at Monarch High School
Coyote Chase Flyer and Registration Form
It's time to get people registered for the Coyote Chase on August 29th. This is our
big fundraiser for the upcoming CC season and the more people who run the more money
we raise! Coach has challenged our team members to sign up as many people as possible
for the race. The athlete's who sign up the most runners for the race will receive gift
certificatesgood for apparel, running shoes, racing flats, etc. Make sure you put your
full name on the top of every entry form you hand out so you get credit for runners you
sign up. There will also be race day registration beginning at 7:00am.
Notice: All team members are required to run the Chase as it is our time trial
to determine varsity for our first race, the Pat Patten Invite on September 4th.
Volunteers Needed
We need volunteers to help with the Coyote Chase on August 29, 2009. This is our major
fundraiser of the year and also serves as our time trial for the first meet. If you can
help out in any capacity please contact Dan Reese at
thefivereeses@comcast.net.
He will be organizing this years volunteers.
