Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program
D/HOH
The BVSD Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HOH) center based program has been housed at Monarch K-8 for the last 2 years. From the first day, the faculty and students have welcomed this program and have made us feel right at home. Our students are involved in many activities at Monarch K-8 such as interscholastic sports, all school plays, even announcers for the morning video announcements!
Approximately 16 students from throughout the district who meet the criteria for a center-based program attend the K-8. These students have a variety of hearing losses and communication styles. They all receive instruction based on their individual educational needs with support from a teacher of the Deaf, and some, through the use on an educational interpreter.
Along with their education, the D/HOH students and staff strive to promote Deaf awareness in the school and community. Recent activities have included the students signing the National Anthem at two University of Colorado sporting events, visits and classes at Balfour Retirement Home, after school sign language classes for staff, students and community members, weekly sign classes in classrooms that have a D/HOH student, Deaf role model visits to school, and special classroom presentations about Deaf rights, community access, assistive technology and the mechanics of the ear.
